FAQs
I. The Root of It All: Our Brand & Philosophy
1. Where is NYC Herbs located? Are you a local business?
Yes, we are proudly rooted in the South Bronx. Our physical store is our home, and you can find us at 452 East 138th Street, Bronx, NY 10454. We are a local, family-operated business deeply committed to our community.
2. What does "family-operated" mean for NYC Herbs?
It means every herb on our shelf has been selected by us, every customer is treated like family, and every decision is made with our community's well-being in mind. We're not a faceless corporation; you'll often find us right here in the store, ready to help.
3. What is your mission?
Our mission is to empower our community with the knowledge and tools to take control of their well-being through the proven power of plants. We believe in transparency, education, and providing access to the highest quality natural remedies.
4. How are you different from a big-box health store or online retailer?
Our difference is in our roots. We offer curated quality, not overwhelming quantity. We provide expert, personalized guidance you can't get from an algorithm. And we are deeply invested in the health of our Bronx community, not just our bottom line.
5. Do you really not sell or share my customer data?
Absolutely not. Your trust is the most valuable ingredient we have. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes. Your data is protected with robust encryption and treated with the same respect we afford your health.
6. How do you ensure the quality and ethics of your products?
We vet every supplier personally. We prioritize organic and wildcrafted sources, demand transparency about origin and processing, and select partners who share our values of sustainability and ethical harvesting. For us, quality is non-negotiable.
7. Do you support local community initiatives?
Yes! Community is our ecosystem. We support local initiatives through partnerships, hosting events for local healers, and donating space and products for community wellness efforts. Please get in touch if you have a cause aligned with our mission.
8. How can I get involved with the NYC Herbs community beyond shopping?
The best way is to join our mailing list and follow us on social media. That's where we announce all our seasonal workshops, seminars, and community gatherings. Come learn and grow with us.
II. Sourcing & Quality: The Seed to Shelf Journey
9. Where do your herbs and products come from?
We source from a network of trusted, ethical farms and wildcrafters primarily within North America, with some key herbs sourced from their indigenous regions around the world where their potency is greatest.
10. Are your herbs organic? What certifications do you have?
Many of our herbs are certified organic, and we clearly label them as such. For non-certified items, we work with suppliers who use organic practices but may be in the certification process. We are always transparent about our sourcing.
11. What does "wildcrafted" mean, and do you offer wildcrafted herbs?
Wildcrafting is the practice of harvesting plants from their natural, wild habitat. We do carry carefully sourced wildcrafted herbs, chosen for their exceptional potency. We only work with harvesters who use sustainable, respectful practices to protect natural ecosystems.
12. How do you test your products for purity and potency?
We work with suppliers who conduct third-party testing for contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, and microbes. We also assess potency through organoleptic analysis (touch, smell, taste) and review Certificates of Analysis (COAs) to ensure you get a effective product.
13. Are your herbs and supplements non-GMO?
Yes. We are committed to providing non-GMO products. This is a core part of our quality standard.
14. Do you offer vegan, gluten-free, or allergen-free products?
Yes, we have a wide selection. Many of our capsules are vegan (cellulose), and we offer many gluten-free options. Please always check the label or ask us—we’re happy to help you find a product that fits your needs.
15. What is your stance on sustainability and packaging?
We strive to minimize our footprint. We offer products in recyclable packaging and encourage the use of reusable bags for our bulk herbs. We are constantly exploring more sustainable options.
III. For the New Leaf: Beginner & How-To
16. I'm new to herbs. Where should I start?
Welcome! Start simple. A great way to begin is with a gentle herbal tea blend for a specific need, like calming chamomile or energizing green tea. You can also book a quick consultation with us in-store—we love guiding new friends.
17. What's the difference between a tea, a tincture, and a capsule?
-
Teas (Infusions/Decoctions): Ideal for daily, gentle nourishment and hydration.
-
Tinctures (Liquid Extracts): Concentrated, fast-acting, and highly absorbable. Great for targeted support.
-
Capsules: Convenient, pre-measured, and tasteless. Ideal for potent herbs or those with a strong flavor.
18. How do I make a simple herbal tea?
For leaves and flowers (an infusion): Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 tsp of dried herb. Steep 5-15 minutes, covered.
For roots and barks (a decoction): Simmer 1 tbsp of herb in 1 cup of water for 15-20 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy.
19. How do I use a tincture?
The most common way is to place the recommended number of drops (usually 20-40) under your tongue, hold for 30 seconds, and then swallow. You can also add it to a small amount of water.
20. What are adaptogens, and why are people talking about them?
Adaptogens are a special class of herbs (like Ashwagandha, Reishi, and Rhodiola) that help your body adapt to and resist physical and mental stress. They work gradually to bring your body back into balance.
21. Can you help me find something for [common concern like stress, sleep, energy]?
Of course. This is what we do best. Please tell us more about your goal in-store or via email, and we can point you to herbs that have traditionally been used for support in those areas.
22. Do you have recipes or guides for beginners?
Yes! We share recipes on our blog and social media channels. We also cover this in our beginner-friendly workshops.
IV. The Core Collection: Product-Specific
Herbs (Loose & Bulk):
23. Can I buy herbs in bulk? Is there a discount?
Yes, we sell most of our loose herbs by the ounce and offer bulk pricing discounts for larger quantities (typically over a pound). Please inquire in-store. or Call.
24. How should I store my loose herbs at home?
Keep them in airtight glass jars in a cool, dark, and dry place (not next to the stove!). This protects their potency and flavor.
25. Do you grind herbs, or are they pre-ground?
We sell most herbs whole or cut-and-sifted to preserve their freshness and essential oils. We have a grinder available in-store if you need something powdered.
26. What is your most popular single herb?
It's a close race between Ashwagandha for stress support and Elderberry for immune health.
Teas & Blends:
27. What's the difference between your "Everyday Wellness" and "Advanced Botanicals" blends?
"Everyday" blends are gentle, delicious, and perfect for daily use. "Advanced" blends are more potent, often featuring stronger-acting herbs like adaptogens and are formulated for targeted, therapeutic support.
28. Do you have caffeine-free tea blends for the evening?
Yes, we have several. Our "Slumber Garden" blend with chamomile and passionflower and our "Nightfall" blend with mint and lemon balm are customer favorites for winding down.
29. Can you create a custom tea blend for me?
We offer custom blending consultations. Please book a time with us so we can create the perfect personalized blend for your needs.
30. What is your best-selling tea blend for energy?
Our "Bronx Sunrise" blend, a vibrant mix of green tea, citrus peel, and ginger, is a top seller for a clean, focused energy without the jitters.
Tinctures & Extracts:
31. What is the extraction process for your tinctures? (e.g., Alcohol vs. Glycerin)
Most of our tinctures are alcohol-based, as alcohol is the most effective solvent for extracting a wide range of plant compounds. We also offer glycerites (glycerin-based) for alcohol-free options, which are great for children or those avoiding alcohol.
32. Why are some tinctures more expensive than others?
Price reflects the cost of the raw material. Some herbs are rare, difficult to harvest, or require a large amount of plant material to create a concentrated extract.
33. What is the difference between a 1:2 and a 1:5 extract?
These ratios indicate the concentration. A 1:2 tincture means 1 part herb was used to 2 parts solvent—it's more concentrated. A 1:5 is 1 part herb to 5 parts solvent. Always check the recommended dosage on the label.
34. Do you have alcohol-free tinctures?
Yes, we offer a selection of glycerites and vinegar-based extracts. Just ask us!
Supplements & Capsules:
35. Are your capsules vegan?
The majority of our capsules are made from plant-based cellulose and are vegan. We always note on the label if they are not.
36. Why would I choose a capsule over a loose herb?
Capsules offer convenience, precise dosing, and are ideal for traveling or for herbs that have a very strong, bitter taste.
37. Can you explain the sourcing for your Mushroom complex blends?
Our medicinal mushrooms (like Reishi, Chaga, Lion's Mane) are sourced from trusted growers who use organic methods on hardwood substrates. This ensures high levels of beneficial compounds (beta-glucans).
Topicals & Wellness Products:
38. Do you carry salves or balms for muscle relief?
Yes. Our "Comfrey & Arnica Relief Salve" is a powerful, popular choice for soothing sore muscles and joints.
39. Are your oils essential oils or carrier oils?
We carry both. Our carrier oils (like Jojoba, Sweet Almond) are used to dilute essential oils for safe skin application. Our essential oils are 100% pure, therapeutic grade for use in aromatherapy and dilution.
40. Do you have products safe for use during pregnancy?
We carry several products that are generally regarded as safe during pregnancy, but we always recommend you consult with your healthcare provider or midwife before using any new herb or supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We are happy to discuss options with you and your provider.
